Here are some little known facts about Lions Clubs in general and Harlow Lions Club in particular.

1. The white stick (or cane) used by blind people was introduced by Lions Clubs.

2.The Old Harlow Victorian Fair was the brain child of Harlow Lions. Sucessfully run for many years by us raising thousands of pounds for local charities such as St. Clare's Hospice.

3. Under the Lions' Sight First' program, 7,500,000 - that's right, seven and a half million - cataract surgeries have been performed throughout the world, bringing sight to millions of people.

4. More than 20 years after the Chernobyl disaster, people in the area are still struggling to cope with the after-effects. The British Lions clubs continue to support them. 

5. Lions in in District 105SE (south-east England), acting with the Lions of District 111M in Germany, actively support the people of Gomel in Belarus and have done for many years. 

6. The Lions Blood Research Appeal was established more than 30 years ago by Lions from the south-east of England and continues to fund research into and treatment for haemophilia, leukaemia and sickle cell disease.

7. MedicAlert, founded in America in 1956 by Dr M Collins after his daughter almost died following an allergic reaction to the horse serum used in routine tetanus antitoxin tests, was brought to the UK as a special project of the British Isles & Ireland Lions Clubs in the early 1960’s. Today MedicAlert is a non-profit making, registered charity that works independently with the invaluable support of Lions.

8. Harlow Lions Club started its service to the Harlow community in 1980.

9. We are the only International Service Organisation to work with and be recognised by the United Nations. Lions representatives attend the Houses of Parliament each March to discuss International and local non political plans.

10. Important international humanitarian ventures have seen Lions International ( the International arm of our charity) providing both financial and importantly, manpower support in non-political areas including UNICEF and WHO (World Health Organisation) among others.

11. Most of the money raised by Harlow Lions Club is spent locally. During the year ended 30 June 2009, 88.5% of our charitable expenditure was spent in Harlow and surrounding areas. Another 6.4% was spent elsewhere in this country, and just 5.1% was sent abroad.
